David Gates, Guest Artist

David's goal for his demonstration is to take you inside the way he thinks about a painting --- from the first spark of an idea to the finished work. Rather than simply standing in front of an easel and demonstrating brushwork, he will use a series of images, almost like a visual podcast, to explain how he finds a subject, how he captures the feeling of a place with his iPad, and how he uses digital tools to explore composition before he ever begins painting. 

David doesn't reproduce a scene literally. He uses abstraction, color, composition, and brushwork to strip away what isn't important and emphasize what is. He calls his approach 'abstract realism' -- transforming a scene into something more emotional, more personal, and hopefully more poignant than the original scene.
