My catch as catch can art training began at nine while camping outside Dove Creek, CO. My dad, a geologist, was mapping the area during the Uranium Rush, and my family often drove into town to eat at the Geiger Counter Café. The café sported an intriguing sign painted by Mr. Merriam, an Abstract artist stranded in town with a broken-down car. Mr. Merriam was teaching art to earn enough to resume his trip East. During lessons with Mr. Merriam, we learned to roll a house paint background on newspaper, mix other house paint to pour onto our background, and then watch the resulting image magically change as the mixed paints rose and fell during drying. Since then, the process of art has always fascinated me.
