My father taught me the basics of photography in the 1950’s. Then there were clearly two sides to it, the art and the technology. I rapidly learned that to do good photography one needed to master aspects of both recording an image and then creating a presentation. Fully understanding and control of the technology greatly enhanced my practice of the art. I learned to use a large format press camera and because of is qualities I have never looked back. Black & White was the only accessible format back then and is still my favorite medium.  Black and White was always really an interpretation of a scene rather than a reproduction. The realm of interpretation and quality are what most intrigued me and still does.

Digital photography has approached the quality and ability of interpretation of film in the last decade or so. It has only changed the technology but not the art. I attempt to photograph scenes that are beautiful, interesting or significant. Creating a finished image is always different and challenging, especially interpreting what I saw in my minds eye.
